Today's Cosmic Canvas brings us to an illustration from 1890?s "Handbook and Atlas of Astronomy" by Sir William Peck (1862-1925). This popular tome was heavenly wonders served as a complete guide for professional astronomers and telescope enthusiasts alike.

The book contains numerous illustrations, many of them quite stunning, but none quite as beautiful as this plate on the sun, which appears almost mystical, alchemical in its use of vibrant golds.
